Texas Hill Country Wine Region

Wine Region · Hye, Texas

The Texas Hill Country AVA, established in 1991 and covering roughly nine million acres, is the second-largest American Viticultural Area in the United States — a limestone-and-granite landscape between Austin and San Antonio where Spanish and Rhone grapes do far better than anyone expected. Its centre of gravity is Wine Road 290, a thirty-mile run of US Highway 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg lined with dozens of tasting rooms.

Tasting rooms generally open daily around 10/11 AM to 5/6 PM, later on weekends; many smaller producers are reservation-only, especially Fri-Sun. Harvest runs July-September. Texas Wine Month is October.
