Texas State Railroad
Industrial Heritage · Palestine, Texas
Twenty-five miles of track through the Piney Woods between Palestine and Rusk, laid in 1881 by convict labour to serve an ironworks at the state penitentiary and now running excursion trains, steam among them, across thirty bridges and through forest that closes over the line. The round trip takes most of a day and there is no road alongside it.

⚠ PRICES AND THE 2026 SCHEDULE ARE NOT STATED HERE — I could not verify them. Check texasstaterailroad.net. ⚠ SERVICES RUN ON A SEASONAL SCHEDULE, NOT DAILY, and are weather and equipment dependent. ⚠ STEAM DOES NOT HAUL EVERY SERVICE — confirm the locomotive for your specific date if that is why you are coming. ⚠ The round trip takes MOST OF A DAY with a layover. Class of service matters: the open-air car is best in October and worst in July. Christmas trains sell out months ahead.
