Texolo Falls and Xico
A 80 M Waterfall Dropping Into A Green Canyon Beside A Stone Arched Bridge, Famous As A Film Location, In A Coffee Growing Pueblo Magico Near Xalapa. A Short Walk From The Road With A Zip Line Over The Gorge, Fog And Rain For Much Of The Year, And A Fair In Xico Each Summer · Xico, Veracruz
Cascada de Texolo is an 80 m waterfall that drops into a green canyon in the Veracruz highlands, close to the coffee town of Xico and about 20 km from Xalapa. A short path leads from the car park to viewpoint steps, and a stone arched bridge crosses the gorge just below the falls, a scene that has been used as a film location. A zip-line runs over the canyon for those who want height, and the surrounding hills are planted with coffee. Xico itself is a Pueblo Magico of steep cobbled streets, local liqueurs, tamales and strong coffee, and it holds a lively Magdalena festival each July. It suits families, couples and anyone on a day out from Xalapa who likes green scenery and an easy walk. It is worth the detour in or just after the rainy months when the water is full; it is not worth a special trip in the driest spring weeks, when the falls thin out. Fog, drizzle and wet, slippery stones are normal, so bring grip and a layer.
Cascada de Texolo, about 5 km from the Pueblo Magico of Xico and 20 km from Xalapa, in the Veracruz highlands; coordinates approximate, Xico, Veracruz, Mexico
The falls are usually open daily during daylight hours, commonly from morning until late afternoon, but the entry point is run locally and the times shift with weather and season, so confirm before a long drive. Heavy rain can close the path, the bridge area or the zip-line for safety, and the zip-line often stops earlier than the walk. Looking at the falls from the public road side and walking around Xico plaza are FREE; the gate to the viewpoint steps usually has a small charge. Some stalls and the zip-line operator may be CLOSED on weekdays outside the holiday periods, and Xico market is busiest at weekends.
