Thalia Mara Hall

Concert Hall · Jackson, Mississippi

Jackson's civic auditorium, opened in 1968 and renamed for the ballet teacher Thalia Mara, and every fourth year the site of the USA International Ballet Competition — one of a small handful of major international ballet competitions in the world, alongside Varna, Moscow and Helsinki, and the one Congress designated the official United States competition. For two weeks dancers in their teens and twenties from thirty-odd countries compete in front of juries of people who ran the world's companies, and then Jackson goes back to being Jackson. The rest of the time it is home to the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and Ballet Mississippi.

255 East Pascagoula Street, Jackson, Mississippi, 39201, United States

A working performance venue rather than a visitor attraction — open for ticketed events. VERIFY THAT THE HALL IS OPEN before planning around it, as it has been closed for extended building repairs in recent years with performances moved elsewhere in Jackson. Symphony and ballet seasons run roughly September to May; the USA International Ballet Competition is held over two weeks in June every four years.
