The Alabama Theatre
National Register Of Historic Places · Birmingham, Alabama
A 1927 movie palace on Third Avenue North in downtown Birmingham, built by Paramount and decorated in a gilded Spanish-Moorish style that was extravagant when it opened and is now almost unrepeatable. It survived the collapse of downtown, a period of near-dereliction and a restoration, and it still has its original Mighty Wurlitzer organ — known locally as Big Bertha — which rises out of the pit and is played before films. It runs as a concert hall most of the year and as a cinema in summer.
1817 3rd Avenue North, Birmingham, Alabama, 35203, United States
A working venue, dark between events and not open for casual visiting. Concert season through autumn and spring; the summer film series with the Wurlitzer is the cheapest and most reliable way to see the interior. Check the calendar before travelling.
