The Barnes Foundation

Art Museum · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The collection Albert C. Barnes assembled on a fortune made from an antiseptic, and which holds more Renoirs than any other institution in the world along with major concentrations of Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso. What makes it unlike any other museum is the hanging: Barnes arranged the works into dense symmetrical ensembles mixing paintings with ironwork, furniture and African sculpture, wrote into his will that they must never be changed, and left no labels on the walls. When the collection moved from suburban Merion to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in 2012 after a decade of litigation, the new building reproduced the old rooms and the ensembles exactly.
