The Big Well Museum
National Register Of Historic Places · Greensburg, Kansas
The world's largest hand-dug well, sunk at Greensburg in 1887 and 1888 to water the railroad — a hundred and nine feet deep and thirty-two feet across, dug by men with shovels and hauled out by bucket, and you can walk down a staircase inside it to the water. In May 2007 an EF5 tornado a mile and three-quarters wide destroyed ninety-five per cent of Greensburg. The town chose to rebuild to the highest green building standards in the country, and the museum that reopened over the well in 2012 tells both stories at once.
