The Broad
Art Museum · Los Angeles, California
The Broad is a contemporary art museum on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles, a short walk from Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Museum of Contemporary Art. It opened in 2015 to show the collection of Eli and Edythe Broad, roughly two thousand postwar and contemporary works, and general admission has been free since the start. The building is wrapped in a perforated white honeycomb shell the architects call the veil, and the stairs and escalator pass through the storage vault on the way up. Inside you find Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman, plus Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room, which has its own separate timed queue. Free does not mean easy: advance timed reservations are strongly recommended, and a standby line runs on the day - confirm how both work now. Plan on two hours for the galleries and extra time for the mirrored room. It is not a museum for toddlers.

The museum has generally opened late morning and closed in the late afternoon from Tuesday to Sunday, staying open later on a few evenings a week, and it has been closed on Mondays - confirm the current days and times on the official site before you travel, because they have shifted over the years. The standby line forms before opening and entry is released as capacity allows, so the posted hours do not tell you when you will get in. The Infinity Mirrored Room runs on its own timed system inside the building and can close early when its queue is full. Holiday closures and special evening events change the schedule, and the shop and cafe keep their own times, so check the day you plan to come.
