The Cabildo and the Presbytère
National Historic Landmark · New Orleans, Louisiana
The two Spanish colonial buildings flanking St Louis Cathedral on Jackson Square, both now Louisiana State Museums. The Cabildo was the seat of the Spanish colonial council and THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE TRANSFER WAS SIGNED IN A ROOM ON ITS SECOND FLOOR IN 1803 — the moment the United States doubled in size. The Presbytère next door holds two permanent exhibitions, one on Mardi Gras and one on Hurricane Katrina, and the Katrina exhibition is among the best things any American museum has done about a disaster.
701 Chartres Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70116, United States
Two Louisiana State Museums with separate admissions and a combination ticket that also covers the Old US Mint. CLOSED ON SOME WEEKDAYS — historically Mondays — with shorter hours than a private museum, so check before travelling. No booking needed for individuals. St Louis Cathedral between them is free and keeps its own hours.
