The Capital Wheel at National Harbor
Ferris Wheel · Oxon Hill, Maryland
A hundred-and-eighty-foot observation wheel standing on a pier over the Potomac at National Harbor, opened in 2014, with forty-two enclosed and climate-controlled gondolas. On a clear day the ride takes in the Washington Monument, the Capitol dome, Alexandria across the water and, looking south, the bluff at Mount Vernon. It is the centrepiece of a large modern waterfront development that also has a casino, a beach with a giant buried in it, and boats to Alexandria and Washington.
