The Chinese Scholar's Garden
Chinese Garden · Staten Island, New York
⚠ ONE OF ONLY A HANDFUL OF AUTHENTIC CLASSICAL CHINESE GARDENS IN THE UNITED STATES — built inside the Snug Harbor campus on Staten Island by ⚠ ARTISANS BROUGHT FROM SUZHOU using traditional methods and materials shipped from China. It is a Ming-style scholar's garden of courtyards, moon gates, a koi pond and a bamboo path, and ⚠ IT IS SEPARATELY TICKETED WITH ITS OWN NARROWER HOURS.
1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, New York, 10301, United States
⚠⚠ CHECK THIS GARDEN'S OWN OPENING DAYS BEFORE YOU TRAVEL — THEY ARE NARROWER THAN THE SNUG HARBOR CAMPUS'S, and people cross the harbour only to find the best thing on the site locked. It is SEPARATELY TICKETED and there is NO SINGLE CAMPUS PASS. ⚠ WALK IT SLOWLY OR DO NOT BOTHER: a scholar's garden is designed so that no single viewpoint shows you the whole thing, and twenty minutes at walking pace gets you nothing. Allow forty-five. ⚠ LOOK AT THE TAIHU ROCKS AS SCULPTURE — they were selected and imported for their form, and in this tradition rocks are collected and valued the way paintings are. Most visitors walk straight past them. ⚠ GO ON A WEEKDAY; the garden is small and a crowd defeats the purpose. ⚠ FREE PARKING, and the Staten Island Ferry is free. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED.
