The Clark Art Institute
Art Museum · Williamstown, Massachusetts
A collection of French Impressionist and nineteenth-century painting assembled by Sterling and Francine Clark and deliberately put somewhere remote — Williamstown, in the far north-west of the state — when it opened in 1955, partly because Clark feared atomic attack on a city. It holds more than thirty Renoirs along with Monet, Degas, Sargent and Homer, sits in a Tadao Ando complex of reflecting pools added in 2014, and owns a hundred and forty acres of hillside you are encouraged to walk into.
