The Enchanted Highway
Scenic Highway · Gladstone, North Dakota
Thirty-two miles of two-lane road in south-western North Dakota lined with enormous scrap metal sculptures, all of them made by one man. Gary Greff, a former schoolteacher with no art training, began building them in 1989 to give people a reason to drive to Regent before the town disappeared. There are seven, spaced along the road between Interstate 94 at Gladstone and Regent at the far end, and Geese in Flight at the northern end is the largest scrap metal sculpture in the world.
Enchanted Highway, Gladstone, North Dakota, 58630, United States
FREE and open 24 hours a day, year round. There are no gates, no staff, no admission and nothing to book - the sculptures stand in lay-bys along 32 miles of public county highway between the Gladstone interchange on Interstate 94 and the town of Regent. ⚠ THERE IS NO FUEL, FOOD, WATER OR TOILET ANYWHERE ALONG THE ROUTE. The gift shop and the Enchanted Castle at the Regent end keep their own seasonal hours. In winter the road drifts and is not a clearing priority, so treat this as a May-to-October drive.
