The French Market

Food Market · New Orleans, Louisiana

Six blocks along the downriver edge of the French Quarter that have been a market of one kind or another since 1791, on ground the Choctaw were already trading on before the French arrived. It claims to be the oldest public market in the United States and the claim is at least arguable. What it is now is a mixture — a covered flea market, a run of food stalls, some produce, a great deal of tourist merchandise, and Café du Monde at the upriver end, which is the busiest corner of it by a wide margin.

1100 North Peters Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70116, United States

Open daily and free to enter. The covered sheds and most stalls generally run from about 10:00 to 18:00, with the food traders later and hours varying by vendor. Café du Monde at the upriver end is open nearly 24 hours and closes only on Christmas Day and for hurricanes. The Old US Mint at the downriver end is a Louisiana State Museum with its own hours and admission.
