The Garden District
National Historic Landmark District · New Orleans, Louisiana
Thirteen blocks of antebellum and Victorian mansions between St Charles Avenue and Magazine Street, built by Americans who arrived after the Louisiana Purchase and were not welcome in the Creole French Quarter, so they bought plantation land upriver and built bigger. The result is a neighbourhood of enormous houses on generous lots with the gardens the Quarter has no room for. It is a residential district — people live in these houses — and the entire visit consists of walking the pavements and looking at them, which is free.
1400 Washington Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70130, United States
A residential neighbourhood, open at all hours and free to walk — there is no gate, no ticket and nothing to book. Guided walking tours run through the day from various operators.
