The Grand Concourse
Historic District · Bronx, New York
A four-and-a-half-mile boulevard driven through the Bronx from 1909, modelled on the Champs-Élysées with separated service roads and pedestrian malls — and lined from the 1920s onward with ⚠ ONE OF THE LARGEST CONCENTRATIONS OF ART DECO APARTMENT BUILDINGS IN THE WORLD. It was the Bronx's grand address, it collapsed with the borough in the 1970s, and it is still standing.
Grand Concourse at East 161st Street, Bronx, New York, 10452, United States
An open public boulevard — free, no gate, no hours. ⚠ IT IS FOUR AND A HALF MILES LONG; pick a section rather than attempting the whole thing, and note that the B, D and 4 run alongside for its full length. ⚠ THE ARCHITECTURE IS THE ATTRACTION AND IT IS VIEWED FROM THE PAVEMENT — the Art Deco lobbies are private. The Bronx Museum of the Arts (FREE) and the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage (weekend-only) are both on the Concourse and are separate rows in this database. ⚠ 1520 SEDGWICK AVENUE, hip hop's birthplace, is a PRIVATE APARTMENT BUILDING WHERE PEOPLE LIVE.
