The Greenbrier

Resort Area · White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

A resort that has operated around a sulphur spring at White Sulphur Springs since 1778, in a vast white hotel largely built in 1913 and decorated after the war by Dorothy Draper in colours and patterns that are still maintained exactly as she left them. Underneath the west wing is Project Greek Island, a 112,000 square foot bunker built in secret between 1958 and 1961 to house the United States Congress in a nuclear war, kept on standby for thirty years and exposed by a newspaper in 1992. It is now a guided tour, and it is the only facility of its kind open to the public.
