The Grove and Vaught-Hemingway Stadium
Stadium · University, Mississippi
Ten acres of oak, elm and magnolia at the centre of the University of Mississippi campus, and on about seven Saturdays a year the most written-about tailgate in American sport. No vehicles are permitted; the tents go up in a co-ordinated rush at a set hour and are laid out in rows with chandeliers, china, silver and a great many people in ties and dresses. The team walks through the middle of it before kick-off along the Walk of Champions, and the local formulation — we may lose the game but we have never lost a party — is quoted so often because it is broadly accurate.
