The High Line
City Park · New York, New York
A mile and a half of disused elevated freight railway on Manhattan's West Side, saved from demolition by two neighbours who founded Friends of the High Line in 1999 and opened in sections from 2009. The planting by Piet Oudolf deliberately imitates the self-seeded meadow that grew on the derelict tracks in the twenty-five years after the last train — three carloads of frozen turkeys, in 1980.
