The Legacy Museum

History Museum · Montgomery, Alabama

A museum in downtown Montgomery, opened in 2018 and moved to its present forty-thousand-square-foot building in 2021, standing on the site of a warehouse where enslaved people were held for sale a short walk from one of the most active slave markets in America. It makes a single continuous argument — that the domestic slave trade, racial terror lynching, segregation and mass incarceration are one history rather than four — and it makes it with immersive rooms, holograms of enslaved people, jars of soil collected from lynching sites and a wall of video visits with people currently in prison. It is run by the Equal Justice Initiative and is sold on a combined ticket with the National Memorial for Peace and Justice a mile and a half away.

400 North Court Street, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104, United States

Generally open most days, roughly 9 AM - 5 PM, with entry by timed ticket booked in advance. Closed some weekdays and on major holidays — check before travelling. Sold on a combined ticket with the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, with a shuttle between the two.
