The Lizard is the southernmost peninsula of mainland Britain, a windswept plateau of heath and cliffs in Cornwall, famous for rare serpentine rock and unusual coastal plants. Lizard Point is the most southerly spot on the mainland, with a lighthouse dating from 1751. The star is Kynance Cove, a National Trust beach of turquoise water, white sand and dark rock stacks that looks almost tropical on a bright day. The cove is tidal: at high tide the beach is cut off, and the path down is steep. The car park fills early and charges, and the cove can be packed in summer. Lizard village has serpentine shops that range from fine to tacky. The area suits walkers, photographers and families happy with a short but steep walk. Plan a full day, and check tide times before you set out. Swimming is risky outside lifeguard flags, and the Atlantic swell here is stronger than it looks from the cliff top. The peninsula and its coast path are open at all times. The National Trust car park at Kynance Cove is staffed or machine controlled in the day and charges non-members, with seasonal hours that you should confirm. The cove cafe is open seasonally, usually from spring to early autumn, and is shut or limited in winter. The beach itself follows the tide: around high tide it is cut off, and the rock stacks are best reached on a falling tide. Lizard village shops and cafes run daytime hours and are quiet in winter. The Lizard lifeboat station and the lighthouse have their own visitor arrangements - confirm before you go.
