The Magnificent Mile

Promenade · Chicago, Illinois

The stretch of North Michigan Avenue between the Chicago River and Oak Street, named in 1947 by the developer Arthur Rubloff and built up as Chicago's flagship shopping and hotel district. Its architecture is the durable part — the 1869 Water Tower that survived the Great Fire, the Wrigley Building, Tribune Tower with fragments of world monuments set into its walls, and the black cross-braced tower of the former John Hancock Center at the north end.
