The Mariners' Museum and Park

Specialty Museum · Newport News, Virginia

One of the largest maritime museums in the world, founded in 1930 at Newport News and set in five hundred and fifty acres of woodland around a lake. Its centrepiece is the USS Monitor Center, which holds what was raised from the wreck of the ironclad off Cape Hatteras between 1998 and 2002 — including the gun turret itself, still submerged in a treatment tank in an active conservation project expected to run for decades.

100 Museum Drive, Newport News, Virginia, 23606, United States
