The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore
Zoo · Baltimore, Maryland
The third-oldest zoo in the United States, founded in 1876 inside Druid Hill Park, and the home of one of the largest and most successful African penguin breeding colonies in North America. It nearly went under in the 2000s — funding collapsed, animals were moved out, closure was openly discussed — and the recovery since is the reason the place has the atmosphere it does. It is compact, hilly, wooded, and much more pleasant to walk than a zoo built on a car park.
