The MAX — Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience

Specialty Museum · Meridian, Mississippi

A museum that opened in Meridian in 2018 to make one argument: that no American state of comparable size has produced anything like the number of people who changed American culture, and that this is not a coincidence. Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Jimmie Rodgers, Leontyne Price, William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Richard Wright, Tennessee Williams, Jim Henson, Morgan Freeman, Oprah Winfrey and several dozen more, all from a poor rural state of under three million people. The building is modern and heavily interactive, and it is deliberately not a hall of fame with photographs on walls.

2155 Front Street, Meridian, Mississippi, 39301, United States

Generally open Tuesday to Saturday with Sunday afternoon opening, roughly 10 AM to 5 PM, and closed at the start of the week — verify before travelling, as a small-city museum keeps a schedule that changes. Closed on major holidays. The theatre programmes live performances and talks separately.
