The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Art Museum · New York, New York

Founded in 1870 by a group of New Yorkers who wanted a national art museum and had no collection to put in one, the Met now holds roughly two million objects across five thousand years and occupies two million square feet of Central Park. It is encyclopaedic in the nineteenth-century sense — Egyptian temple, samurai armour, Vermeer, Rothko and the Costume Institute in one building — and it is physically impossible to see in a day.
