The Mount
National Historic Landmark · Lenox, Massachusetts
Edith Wharton designed and built this house at Lenox in 1902 to demonstrate the principles she had set out in her own book The Decoration of Houses five years earlier — which makes it the rare writer's house that the writer actually authored. She wrote The House of Mirth here, laid out the formal gardens herself, and left in 1911. It sits on a hundred and thirteen acres above Laurel Lake, and because she wrote ghost stories, the evening ghost tours are entirely in keeping.
