The Noguchi Museum

Art Museum · Long Island City, New York

The museum ISAMU NOGUCHI designed, built and installed himself, opened 1985 across the street from the Long Island City studio where he worked — a converted photo-engraving plant and an outdoor sculpture garden, arranged by the artist to show his own work exactly as he wanted it seen. ⚠ IT IS THE FIRST MUSEUM IN AMERICA ESTABLISHED BY A LIVING ARTIST FOR THEIR OWN WORK, and it is the calmest room in New York City.

9-01 33rd Road, Long Island City, New York, 11106, United States

⚠ CLOSED MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS, historically — check noguchi.org before travelling. Generally open Wednesday to Sunday on a daytime schedule. ⚠ A PAY-WHAT-YOU-WISH FIRST FRIDAY HAS RUN HISTORICALLY; the day and mechanism have changed and should be confirmed. ⚠ THE SCULPTURE GARDEN IS HALF THE MUSEUM and the ground-floor gallery is open to the weather on one side — dress accordingly and check the forecast. ⚠ IT IS ABOUT A FIFTEEN-MINUTE WALK FROM THE SUBWAY through industrial Long Island City; the museum has run its own weekend shuttle from Manhattan, which is worth checking. ⚠ SOCRATES SCULPTURE PARK ACROSS THE STREET IS FREE.
