The Old US Mint

National Historic Landmark · New Orleans, Louisiana

A Greek Revival block at the downriver end of the French Quarter, built in 1835 and THE ONLY BUILDING IN THE UNITED STATES TO HAVE SERVED AS BOTH A UNITED STATES AND A CONFEDERATE MINT — it struck coin for the Union, then for Louisiana, then for the Confederacy, then for the Union again. It is now a Louisiana State Museum holding the state jazz collection, including LOUIS ARMSTRONG'S FIRST CORNET, and its third-floor performing arts centre puts on live music. It is also the New Orleans Jazz Museum in all but the name on the door.

400 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70116, United States

A Louisiana State Museum with modest admission and a combination ticket covering the Cabildo and Presbytère. CLOSED ON SOME WEEKDAYS with shorter hours than a private museum — check before travelling. No booking needed for individuals. CONCERTS IN THE THIRD-FLOOR PERFORMING ARTS CENTER ARE PROGRAMMED SEPARATELY, are often free or a few dollars, and are announced on the museum calendar rather than at the door.
