The Parthenon
Modern Monument · Nashville, Tennessee
A full-scale reproduction of the Parthenon in Athens, standing in a Nashville city park because the state built one out of plaster and lath for its 1897 Centennial Exposition and the city liked it too much to pull it down. It was rebuilt in concrete between 1920 and 1931 and is the only full-scale reproduction of the building anywhere. Inside stands Alan LeQuire's Athena Parthenos, nearly forty-two feet of gilded statue completed in 1990 — the largest indoor sculpture in the western world — and, in the lower level, a permanent collection of American paintings.
