The Paterson Museum
History Museum · Paterson, New Jersey
A city museum in the erecting shop of the old Rogers Locomotive Works, and it holds a run of objects that no municipal collection has any business owning. JOHN HOLLAND BUILT THE FIRST PRACTICAL SUBMARINE IN PATERSON and two of his hulls — the Fenian Ram of 1881 and his first boat — sit in this building. SAMUEL COLT'S FIRST FACTORY WAS HERE and the museum holds early Colt revolvers made in the city. Add Rogers locomotives, the Paterson silk industry and a serious mineral collection, and the argument that Paterson was the first planned industrial city in America stops being rhetorical.
2 Market Street, Paterson, New Jersey, 07501, United States
Very modest admission, generally a few dollars or a suggested donation; no booking needed for individuals. THE HOURS ARE LIMITED — a few days a week in a short window, historically weekday-weighted with some weekend hours — AND MUNICIPAL BUDGET AND STAFFING HAVE AFFECTED THE SCHEDULE MORE THAN ONCE, so ring before travelling. Groups and schools should arrange in advance. Parking is nearby rather than on site, with the free Great Falls car parks a short walk away. Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, a few minutes off, is free and runs its own ranger programmes covering the wider industrial story.
