The Stone Pony

Music Venue · Asbury Park, New Jersey

A low brick box a block off the Asbury Park boardwalk that opened in 1974 and became the most famous small room in American rock music. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY BUILT THEIR REPUTATIONS ON THIS STAGE, and Springsteen has walked in unannounced and joined the band often enough over fifty years that people still watch the door. It holds a few hundred people, it has none of the trappings of a shrine, and it is a working club with a working booking calendar. THE SUMMER STAGE, an outdoor lot beside it, takes the big shows from June to September.

913 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, New Jersey, 07712, United States

A WORKING CLUB WITH NO TOURS, NO MUSEUM AND NO DAYTIME ACCESS — on a night without a show the building is locked and there is nothing to see. Check the calendar first. Indoor shows run year round, mostly $20-$50, and the room is small enough that popular dates sell out fast; MOST INDOOR SHOWS ARE 21-AND-OVER WITH ID CHECKED, though some are all-ages and the listing says which. THE SUMMER STAGE, an outdoor unroofed lot beside the club, takes larger acts from roughly June to September at higher prices, on sale months ahead, and rain does not cancel it. No cloakroom or bag storage at either. Paid municipal lots and metered street parking.
