The Strand Historic District
Heritage District · Galveston, Texas
Five blocks of Victorian commercial buildings in downtown Galveston, held to be one of the largest surviving concentrations of iron-front architecture in the United States and a National Historic Landmark District. When Galveston was the richest city in Texas this was the Wall Street of the South; the 1900 hurricane ended that and, paradoxically, saved the buildings, because no one had the money to knock them down and rebuild.
Strand Street, Galveston, Texas, 77550, United States
A public district, always open and free to walk. Shops generally 10 AM - 6 PM; restaurants later. Mardi Gras in February and Dickens on the Strand in early December transform the district and fill the island.
