The Strip District
Food Market · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Half a mile of Penn Avenue between the Allegheny and the hillside, which was Pittsburgh's wholesale produce and meatpacking district for a century and is now the city's market street — Italian and Greek and Asian groceries, a fish market that has been trading since 1912, coffee roasters, and pavement vendors selling black and gold. Saturday morning is the event: the street closes in on itself with stalls, the queues form outside the delis, and half of Pittsburgh appears to be buying cheese.
Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 15222, United States
A public street, open at all times. Shops and market stalls trade mornings into the early afternoon, with Saturday morning by far the busiest and fullest. Many businesses close early in the afternoon and a number close Sunday or Monday. Restaurants and bars keep later hours.
