Thi Lo Su Waterfall
Often Called Thailand'S Largest Waterfall, In The Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, Part Of The Western Forest Complex Near The Myanmar Border · Umphang, Tak
Thi Lo Su is often called the largest waterfall in Thailand: a broad wall of water falling in many tiers and curtains over a limestone cliff hung with ferns and moss, deep in the forest of the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary in the far south of Tak province, near the border with Myanmar. The sanctuary is part of the Western Forest Complex, one of the largest protected forest areas in mainland Southeast Asia. The falls are at their fullest just after the rains, roughly October to December, when the roar can be heard long before you see them. Getting there is an adventure in itself: first the long road of endless curves from the border town of Mae Sot to the small Karen town of Umphang, then either a multi-day trip from Umphang with rafting down the Mae Klong river past the Thi Lo Re falls and a trek through the jungle, or in the drier months a rough road to the ranger station and a walk of about 1.5 km. Visitors camp at the ranger station. There is little phone signal, no ATM and no easy way out, so plan carefully and carry cash.
Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, Mae Klong, Umphang, Umphang, Tak, 63170, Thailand
NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the falls and trail are open during daylight, roughly 8 am to 4 or 5 pm, with camping at the ranger station overnight; the road to the ranger station is open to vehicles in the drier months, roughly December to May, and closed to private vehicles in the wet season, roughly June to November, when access is by tour with rafting and trekking only, and the falls may close altogether in the height of the rains; check. The traps that ruin a trip are arriving in Mae Sot too late for the last songthaew to Umphang, arriving with a private car in the wet season, finding the campsite full at New Year, running out of cash and trying to rush the whole trip in two days. Confirm current times before relying on them.
