Thomas Edison National Historical Park
National Historical Park · West Orange, New Jersey
Edison's laboratory complex at West Orange, built in 1887 and TEN TIMES THE SIZE OF THE MENLO PARK WORKSHOP THAT MADE HIM FAMOUS — this is where the modern industrial research laboratory was invented, and where the alkaline battery, the motion picture camera, the disc phonograph and a great deal else were developed. HIS LIBRARY, HIS DESK AND HIS CHEMISTRY BENCH ARE STILL AS THEY WERE, along with a reconstruction of the Black Maria, the world's first film studio, which rotated on a track to follow the sun. Glenmont, his 29-room house, is up the hill and is shown separately.
211 Main Street, West Orange, New Jersey, 07052, United States
A National Park Service unit with modest admission; under-16s generally free and the America the Beautiful pass accepted. Federal fee-free days apply. The laboratory complex keeps daytime hours with federal holiday closures. GLENMONT IS A SEPARATE TIMED TOUR, included in admission but with limited places booked at the laboratory visitor centre on the day — ASK AT THE DESK ON ARRIVAL, because tickets run out on busy days. GLENMONT ALSO CLOSES ON SOME DAYS WHEN THE LABORATORY IS OPEN and is reached by car in a private gated community. Buildings have closed for restoration at various times; check before travelling.
