Thomas Raddall Provincial Park

A Coastal Park Of White Sand Beaches, Port Joli Bay, A Forest Campground, Hiking Trails And A Seabird Area, Named For A Nova Scotia Author. A Quiet Beach Park Near Kejimkujik Seaside, With Long Walks And Few Crowds · Port Joli, Nova Scotia

Thomas Raddall Provincial Park occupies a quiet stretch of the South Shore of Nova Scotia on Port Joli Bay, in Queens County, about 40 km south-west of Liverpool and a little over an hour from Shelburne by road (confirm the distances). It is named for Thomas Raddall, the novelist of Liverpool who wrote of this coast. The park joins a wild shoreline of white sand beaches, granite points, salt marsh and spruce forest, and it sits close to the Seaside part of Kejimkujik National Park, which protects the next headlands. A forest campground with private sites, a few short walking trails and access to the beach make it a calm alternative to the busy resorts near Lunenburg. Port Joli is known for seabirds and waterfowl on its tidal flats, and the sea is cold, so long beach walks and wildlife watching suit it better than swimming. Fog is frequent in early summer, and the park has few crowds even in August, with the road ending in open coast.

The park is operated as a seasonal provincial park, with the campground, gate and washrooms normally running from about late May or June to early autumn, so confirm the opening and closing dates with Nova Scotia Provincial Parks before you go. Outside the season the access road may be gated and the services closed, although the shore beyond is often reachable on foot. Day use follows daylight. The campground office keeps limited hours, and late arrivals should arrange check-in ahead of time. Fog, wind and autumn storms can close beach access without notice, so call before a long drive in May or late September (confirm).
