Thousand Islands
Archipelago · Alexandria Bay, New York
An archipelago of 1,864 islands strung along fifty miles of the St Lawrence River where it leaves Lake Ontario, SPLIT BETWEEN NEW YORK AND ONTARIO with the international boundary threading between them. To count as one an island must stay above water year round and support at least two living trees. Gilded Age New York built summer castles out here, and the salad dressing is genuinely named after the place.

⚠ SEASONAL. The region is open and free to drive through year round, but BOAT TOURS, BOLDT CASTLE AND MOST OF BOTH VILLAGES RUN ROUGHLY MID-MAY TO MID-OCTOBER and close hard for the winter, when the river ices. ⚠ THE ARCHIPELAGO IS SPLIT WITH ONTARIO — roughly half the islands are Canadian, and two-nation boat tours cross the border; check passport requirements with your operator before booking. ⚠ NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE.
