Three Gorges (Yangtze River)

Yangtze River Three Gorges Scenic Area; The Three Gorges Dam Visitor Area Is A National 5A Tourist Attraction · Fengjie, Chongqing

The most famous stretch of the Yangtze: the Qutang, Wu and Xiling gorges, which run for about 190 km from Baidicheng in Chongqing to near Yichang in Hubei between limestone walls hundreds of metres high. Poets, painters and river traders made it legendary; the Three Gorges Dam at its lower end raised the river and turned it into a calmer, deeper reservoir. It remains one of the classic river journeys on earth, sailed on multi-day cruises between Chongqing and Yichang with side trips into narrow tributary gorges. Kuimen, the towering gateway to Qutang Gorge where this row is pinned, is the view printed on the back of the 10-yuan note.
