Thy National Park and Klitmoller
Denmark'S First National Park, Established In 2008 Along The Wild North Sea Dunes, Heaths And Lakes Of Thy, With The Cold Water Surf Village Of Klitmoller, Known As Cold Hawaii · Klitmoller, North Denmark Region
Thy National Park was Denmark's first national park, established in 2008 along roughly 55 km of the North Sea coast of northwest Jutland, from the Agger Tange spit in the south to Hanstholm in the north. It protects one of the wildest landscapes in the country: high white dunes, huge open heaths of heather and crowberry, clear dune lakes, windswept conifer plantations planted to stop drifting sand, and an exposed beach that runs almost unbroken for the whole length of the park. There is no gate, no fee and no single entrance - you simply walk in from the coastal villages, car parks and trails. Klitmoller, at the northern end, is a small fishing village that became the heart of Denmark's cold-water surf scene, nicknamed Cold Hawaii, and has hosted international windsurfing contests. People come for space, silence, big skies, birds, surfing and long walks. The honest caveat: this is a raw, cold and often windy coast with few facilities, the sea is dangerous for swimming, and it is a long way from Copenhagen, so it rewards two or three days rather than a quick visit.
Nationalpark Thy, the dune coast from Agger Tange to Hanstholm, and the surf village of Klitmoller, Klitmoller, North Denmark Region, Denmark
The national park is open all year, 24 hours a day, with no gate and no entrance fee. Some areas, notably parts of the Hanstholm reserve and Agger Tange, are closed or restricted to marked paths, especially in the bird breeding season from roughly spring to midsummer - confirm current access rules on signs at each car park. From Copenhagen take the train to Struer and change to the local line to Thisted, roughly 4.5-5 hours in total, then a local bus or taxi about 20 km to Klitmoller; by car it is roughly 4.5-5 hours via the Great Belt Bridge (toll). Nothing needs booking except holiday cottages, campsites and surf lessons in summer.
