Tianmen Mountain
Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park · Zhangjiajie, Hunan
A sheer-sided limestone mountain rising straight out of Zhangjiajie city in Hunan, pierced near its top by Tianmen Cave - Heaven's Gate - a natural arch more than 130 metres high that opened when a cliff collapsed, traditionally dated to 263 CE. A staircase of 999 steps climbs to the arch, a road of 99 hairpin bends snakes up the mountainside below it, and one of the longest passenger cableways in the world normally runs from the city centre to the summit. Glass-floored skywalks bolted to the cliffs at about 1,400 m, a Buddhist temple on the summit plateau and wingsuit flights through the arch have made it an internationally viral sight. It is a separate destination from the pillar forest of Wulingyuan, about an hour away. The main cableway has been under long-term maintenance since November 2025, with shuttle buses replacing part of the route.
