Tierra del Fuego National Park

Argentina'S Southernmost National Park, Created 1960, Where Ruta Nacional 3 Ends At Bahia Lapataia · Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego National Park begins about twelve kilometres west of Ushuaia and runs to the Chilean border, a landscape of sub-Antarctic beech forest, peat bogs, lakes and mountains dropping to the Beagle Channel. It is where Ruta 3, the road that starts in Buenos Aires, finally ends at Bahia Lapataia, marked by a sign giving the distance to Alaska. For most visitors it is a half-day or day trip from Ushuaia, and it is worth it: the coastal path along the channel is one of the most beautiful short walks in Patagonia, the lakes of Roca and Acigami reflect snowy peaks, and upland geese, steamer ducks, condors and Magellanic woodpeckers are common. One ecological story runs through the park: North American beavers, released in the 1940s for fur, multiplied without predators, and their dams have flooded and killed large stretches of forest, which you see from the trails. Access is by car, tour, or the tourist train from outside the park. It is at its best in summer and quiet in the snows of winter, when some trails close.
