Tigre and the Parana Delta

River Town At The Head Of The Parana Delta, A Maze Of Channels And Islands North Of Buenos Aires · Tigre, Buenos Aires

Tigre is a river town about an hour north of Buenos Aires at the head of the Parana Delta, one of the largest river deltas in the world: thousands of low green islands separated by brown channels, where houses stand on stilts, the post, groceries and the school run by boat, and weekend houses and rowing clubs line the banks. The ordinary way to see it is the way locals do, on the wooden commuter launches that leave from the river station and drop people at jetties along the way, though catamarans and private boats also run tours, and kayaks are hired from the town. In Tigre itself, the Puerto de Frutos craft market sells wicker and furniture made from delta cane, the grand Tigre Club building now houses the Museo de Arte Tigre, and the riverside promenade is lined with rowing clubs. The Parque de la Costa amusement park is next to the station. The town is easy to reach by train, including the scenic Tren de la Costa, and it is a favourite weekend escape, so weekdays are much calmer.
