Timberline Lodge

Historic Site · Government Camp, Oregon

A mountain lodge at 5,960 feet on the south side of Mount Hood, built between 1936 and 1938 by the Works Progress Administration and dedicated by Franklin Roosevelt in September 1937. It was made almost entirely by hand by unemployed craftsmen - hand-forged iron, hand-carved newel posts, hand-loomed fabric, mosaics from scrap - as a deliberate demonstration that relief work could produce something beautiful. It is a National Historic Landmark, it is still a working hotel, and it is free to walk into.

Timberline Highway, Government Camp, Oregon, 97028, United States

The lodge is open year round and is FREE to walk into - it is a public building, not a ticketed attraction. The restaurant, bar, day lodge and shop keep their own hours, and free guided history tours run daily in season. ⚠ AN OREGON SNO-PARK PERMIT IS REQUIRED AT THE CAR PARK FROM NOVEMBER TO APRIL, and tyre chains are a legal requirement on the road up in winter - both are enforced. The ski area, including the year-round Palmer Snowfield, sells lift tickets separately. Storms close the access road at short notice; check conditions before driving up.
