Timmins and the Gold Mine Tour

The Centre Of The Porcupine Gold Camp, Where The Hollinger And Dome Mines Turned The Area Into One Of Canada'S Great Mining Towns, With A Tour Of A Historic Mine Site, The Timmins Museum, The Dome Open Pit Lookout And The Hometown Of Singer Shania Twain. A Long Drive North From Toronto · Timmins, Ontario

Timmins sits in the Porcupine gold camp of north-eastern Ontario, a city of roughly 40,000 people built on one of the richest gold discoveries in Canadian history. Prospectors staked the Hollinger and Dome claims in 1909, and the town took the name of Noah Timmins, whose company backed the big mines. The camp produced gold for well over a century, and the headframes, open pits and tailings around the city still tell that story. A guided tour of the historic Hollinger mine site shows how ore was drilled, blasted and hoisted, the Timmins Museum covers the camp, the great fire of 1911 and the families of many nations who came to work, and the Dome lookout shows the scale of a vast open pit, and the city is the hometown of singer Shania Twain. It is a long drive from Toronto on Highways 11 and 101, so plan an overnight stay, bring warm layers even in summer, and confirm tour seasons before you set out.
