Tirpitz and Blavandshuk

Museum Opened In 2017 By The Architects BIG, Cut Into The Dunes Beside A German Wartime Bunker, Near Blavandshuk Lighthouse At Denmark'S Westernmost Point · Blavand, Region of Southern Denmark

Tirpitz is a museum in the dunes at Blavand, on the North Sea coast of south-west Jutland, and Blavandshuk lighthouse, a few kilometres away, marks the westernmost point of mainland Denmark. The museum opened in 2017 and was designed by the architects BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group): instead of a building on the dunes, its galleries are cut into the sand around a sunken courtyard, so from a distance you see almost nothing but glass slits in the heather. Beside it stands the Tirpitz position, a huge German gun bunker from the Second World War, part of the Atlantic Wall, which you can walk into. Inside are exhibitions on the Atlantic Wall, on amber from the west coast, and on the history of this coast; it is said to be run by the Varde museums. People come for the architecture, the war history and a windy walk to the lighthouse and beach. The honest caveat: Blavand is far from everything, about 3.5 hours from Copenhagen, and this is a detour for people already on the west coast, not a reason to cross Denmark on its own.
