Tivoli Gardens

Amusement Park And Pleasure Garden Opened In 1843 In The Centre Of Copenhagen, One Of The Oldest Operating Amusement Parks In The World · Copenhagen, Capital Region of Denmark

Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park and pleasure garden that opened in 1843 in the heart of Copenhagen, just across the road from Central Station, and it is often described as one of the oldest operating amusement parks in the world. It is not a giant theme park: it is a compact, romantic garden of flower beds, a lake, thousands of coloured lights, Moorish and Chinese-style pavilions, restaurants and theatres, with rides tucked among the trees. Locals come for dinner, concerts and a stroll as much as for the rides, and it is said to have inspired Walt Disney. Highlights include Rutschebanen, a wooden roller coaster dating from around 1914 that still carries a brakeman on each train, the tall Star Flyer and drop tower with views over the city, the Pantomime Theatre and the free Friday concerts in summer. The honest caveats: it is only open in seasons (summer, Halloween and Christmas) and closed much of the winter, and entry plus rides plus food makes it an expensive evening.

Tivoli opens in seasons, not all year: a summer season roughly from April to September, a Halloween season in October, a Christmas season from mid-November to around New Year, and sometimes a short winter event - it is closed most of January to March. Hours vary by day and season, typically late morning to late evening, later on Fridays and Saturdays; confirm the current calendar. The main entrance is on Vesterbrogade, a 2-minute walk from Copenhagen Central Station. Buy entry and ride passes online in advance on busy days.
