Toccoa Falls
Waterfall · Toccoa Falls, Georgia
A 186-foot waterfall — taller than Niagara — dropping into a rock amphitheatre on the campus of Toccoa Falls College in north-east Georgia, reached by a walk of a couple of hundred metres from the gift shop. It is one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls east of the Mississippi and one of the easiest to get to. On 6 November 1977 an earthen dam above it failed in the night and the flood killed thirty-nine people on the campus below, most of them students and their families, and the site is marked.
