Todra Gorge

A Limestone Cleft In The Eastern High Atlas With Walls Commonly Quoted At Up To About 300 M And A Floor Narrowing To A Few Tens Of Metres; Morocco'S Best Known Rock Climbing Venue And A Staple Stop On The Route To The Sahara · Tinghir, Draa-Tafilalet

Todra Gorge is a limestone cleft in the eastern High Atlas where a single road, a shallow river and two walls commonly quoted at up to about 300 m share a floor only a few tens of metres wide. The honest headline is that the famous stretch is short - a few hundred metres of true narrows, which a coach party photographs in twenty minutes and usually does. What makes the place worth a night lies either side of that: the Todgha oasis below at Tinghir, a long green palmery of walled gardens, mud-brick villages and open irrigation channels, and the upper gorge north of the last lodging, which empties of visitors within a kilometre of the car park. Climbers come for something else again, several hundred bolted limestone routes on the walls above the road, best from autumn through spring. Caveats worth knowing before you build a day around it: the car park and the carpet stalls are crowded and insistent at midday, the river is a trickle for much of the year, and after heavy rain upstream the same flat floor floods fast.

Narrows of the Todgha river about 15 km north of Tinghir, reached by a single road that runs between the cliffs, Tinghir, Draa-Tafilalet, Morocco

There is no gate and no opening time: the narrows are a public road with a public riverbed beside it, so you can walk in at any hour, and the hours that matter are the early morning and the last hour of sun. Coaches on the Sahara run tend to arrive between about 11:00 and 15:00, which is when the floor is busiest and the light flattest. A small charge of a few dirhams per car or per person is collected at a barrier on the approach road in some seasons - confirm on arrival and ask for a ticket. The handful of lodgings at the gorge mouth and in Tinghir open year round, with some running skeleton staff in midwinter. Tinghir holds a weekly souk; confirm the day locally, as market days shift. Getting here: Tinghir is on the Ouarzazate to Errachidia road with CTM and Supratours coaches and grand taxis, and the gorge is about 15 km north of town, roughly 30 minutes by grand taxi. Book climbing guides and the Dades circuit ahead.
