A zoo whose most remarkable feature is its buildings — a nearly intact set of 1930s structures put up by Depression-era work programmes in a heavy Spanish Colonial Revival style, including an aquarium, an aviary and an amphitheatre that are architecture rather than enclosures. It has also been voted the best zoo in the country in national readers' polls more than once.

Open daily year-round with seasonal hours, shorter in winter. Lights Before Christmas runs on evenings in November and December on separate tickets. Parking is charged separately.
